My thesis for the Boyle paper is “In T.C. Boyle’s stories “The Human Fly” and “On For the Long Haul,” Boyle uses the themes of obsession and greed to show that obsession is unhealthy and can lead to clouded judgment, which allows people with ulterior motives, such as greed, to take advantage of them and their situation.” I chose “The Human Fly” and “On For the Long Haul” because I thought that their themes of obsession and greed went hand in hand in these two stories. Although the main characters and their motives are very different in each story, their obsession leads to an opportunity for others to take advantage of them. Both Zoltan and Bayard put their trust in agents who didn’t have their best interests at heart. The agent’s ulterior motives caused both stories to end in the death of their clients. This shows that Boyle believes that unhealthy obsession causes clouded judgment and allows others to take advantage of situations. It also shows that greed for self-profit will cause harm to those around you. Even if you have compassion for a person, it can quickly be over ruled by the urge to be successful off of their demise. For “The Human Fly” each of Zoltan’s stunts support my thesis. After each stunt, Zoltan gets in worse and worse shape despite the resources he now has available to him. His obsession with doing more intense stunts show that he is obsessed with not only fame, but death. Zoltan’s Agent uses his obsession to further his own career. He loses all compassion for Zoltan and doesn’t even mourn at his funeral because of the profit he made off of his life and death. In “On For the Long Haul,” Wemp’s obsession with safety leads him to make the rash decision of moving his family out into the middle of nowhere. They are not physically or mentally prepared to live the lifestyle he chooses for them. His agent, Sol, profits greatly off of their move and has no concern for their safety. He doesn’t even recognize Wemp when he sees him.
