For my argument paper I am pretty set on my topic, which is that pageants for kids is exploitative. I chose this topic because there is a lot of television shows that deal with child pageants like Toddler and Tiaras that is very popular but it is an awful concept behind it all. I was never apart of the pageant world and I have nothing against it when you are older but as a child I think it’s a terrible way to raise your child in that type of environment. The way those kids grow up to be is very sad too because just watching them on the show they are so spoiled and bratty. I also feel like the parents that put their kids in these pageants are seem almost trying to live their lives vicariously through their children and force them to do all these things they do not want to do and instead not letting them be who they want to be. It interests me because pageants are becoming more and more popular but I do not see how people don’t the huge negativities and downfalls of this. The counter argument of this is that people say that it helps with self confidence, public speaking, and learning that its okay to win or lose and also they say it helps kids figure out who they want to be, but kids have no idea who they want to be but it’s the parents controlling them. But this counter argument is so weak because kids could do dancing or sports to learn the very good life lessons and all those counter arguments people say. There are so many other things parents could put their child in that are so much more positive and not exploitative. Pageants can also be very sexual for such young kids and teaching them to show off their body to “win” money or trophies. It does not teach them the concept of winning and losing but those they are not good enough or pretty enough or skinny for the judges. It’s almost like those children are being judged on how well they can sell themselves.
