I think it's safe to say that this class has blown all of my other classes out of the water in terms of how enjoyable it is. My professor may come off as a sophisticated asshole that uses his sarcasm to casually put down other students in an attempt to be funny, but he's shown he's capable of actually teaching me how to write, showing that his puns are more relief than anything to the students that are struggling the most. All these years I've had teachers tell me that I'm a talented enough writer, that my papers were deserving of the grade they received, which would usually be an A or a B. I realize now that all of the sugarcoating has made me soft when it comes to understanding how to write. Thankfully, Mr. Bates was able to pick up the slack and call me out on all I've done wrong. I'm not sure if it's just the aspect of college finally sinking in, but for the first time in a long time I feel like I'm actually learning something in English, not just being told that my bullshit writing was enough to get by. No, I've actually had to try in this class. And while I could have dropped it when I had the chance, my stubborn ways got the better of me. There was just something about this class that made me want to prove I could get through it, and while my grade point average may be suffering, it wouldn't have felt right to take the easy way out. I'm not a quitter; I like to finish the challenges in my life to the best of my ability no matter how difficult they may be, and I feel as if this part of me was intensified while taking this class, as if something urged me to do more than just accept my failures.
As far as what I've actually learned, there are a number of things. Observation, quotation and explanation. Those are just three words, but they've helped me in more ways than one while trying to fluently write a decent paper, as they do more to explain my train of thought than even I can. I've also learned to interpret the writings of T.C. Boyle- and most likely any other author now- more efficiently, and hopefully that should be helpful for my next English class.
