The quote I feel I identified with the most has to be the Friedrich Nietzsche quote, which stated, “ That which doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger”. This quote has remained relevant throughout my life, as I have faced many hard times. In trying times I feel like that little glimpse of hope you get from knowing that, the outcome will only be beneficial for you makes you want to persevere. Many times as you face hardships you think, “man I just don’t know how I will be able to keep on going” falling into a victim role that can change the way you view yourself. This quote reminds you that even when things seem intolerable there is still light at the end of the tunnel. During my first semester of college I was faced with some of the most trying times of my young live. I know you’re thinking what could have impacted at nineteen-year-old girl this early in her life, but you would be surprised of all the tragedies I have encountered and how it has impacted my life. In September exactly a month after my first semester of college my daddy passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. By my use of the word “daddy” rather than dad or father, it can be implied that I am a die hard, do anything for him, never forsake him type of daddy’s girl. My daddy was the only man I trusted and loved completely, so I didn’t just lose a parent in September I lost a friend to confide in, a mentor to teach me the way the world works, a guru when it came to my many questions concerning love. As I sit here and reminiscence on the day my life changed, I recognize how true the quote by Nietzsche is.“ That which does not kill us, makes us stronger”. After finding out the news I will admit I was rather dramatic, I selfishly chose to be the “victim” because I thought sure some people lost a friend, a husband, a brother, uncle etc. but I lost my best friend, my daddy, and could only see my pain in the situation. It wasn’t until I had a conversation with my mother that I realized that I couldn’t be the victim anymore, but instead be strong and let the situation teach me something. My mother and I bonded over the loss of my daddy and became closer which was one benefit. Secondly I truly discovered my strength because I did not get behind in any of my classes. Lastly the whole situation taught me that you don’t know your own strength until it tested so, you can never say what you can or can’t handle. (mind over matter)
