In previous English classes I have been exposed to numerous types of techniques of accomplishing my goals as a writer. I found it most beneficial when a teacher would take it step by step to help make sure the students would know what they needed to do to make their writing better. I have had a lot of teachers in the past that do not pay any attention to the students that are not very good at writing long critical essays. I appreciated English classes that were interesting and interactive. Teachers that can make learning the English language fun are hard to find. A few of my teachers would focus on sentence structures and the appropriate amount of verbs and adjectives each sentence needs in order to be considered a “college level paper”. I always learned better when a teacher would help me learn about theories and ways to make it easier to think of situations analytically. I think my past in regular or honors instead of advanced placement English classes will help me more because I feel that I have built more of a foundation in my writings instead of trying to impress a teacher that is looking for certain criteria to be met in my instead of intellect and sophistication. My classes in high school made it seem like someone could only be considered a good writer if they were smart and knew a lot of factual information on topics. One film studies teacher I had motivated students to write with their hearts instead of their brains that were turned robotic by the English teachers in my school. That class probably hurt my high school GPA because of the drastic difference in writing I had to learn. The teachers would not appreciate in the difference of writings each student had. They would try to make everyone write the same way instead of provoking and appreciating individuality in writing. I hope I will benefit from staying unique in my writings and not conforming to the rest of the students in my class. I think my confidence in which I am will help me most this semester.
