"That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche. First of all, I had to Google who Friedrich Nietzsche was, because I’ve never heard of him before. Turns out he’s a German philologist, and the quote is form his book Twilight of Idols. This research honestly didn’t help me understand the quote any more.
I’ve heard this quote before, but in a much different form. And by “different form”, I mean the pop song “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson. This is a quote I’ve thought a lot about the past few years. For a while, it was a quote I lived my life by. But I recently realized that Nietzsche isn’t completely correct in his statement. Nietzsche is talking about making mistakes in life. He is telling us that we have to learn from our mistakes, and not make them in the future. But I disagree. It’s not the fact that the mistake is what’s making us stronger; it’s our actions afterwards. It’s the learning that we do after our mistake that is what makes us stronger. If we make a mistake, we can’t just try to ignore the fact that it happened. If we want to improve our lives, and not make that mistake in the future, we have to be proactive about it.
I honestly had trouble choosing between these two quotes. I identify with both of them. But I felt Nietzsche’s quote was a little more open to interpretation. There are a few different meanings of the quote. Frost’s quote is more direct; you should try to be different and stand out in life. I feel Nietzsche’s quote is more about improving yourself, and not trying to “be different” than everyone else around you.
This quote is something that comes to mind from time to time. I’ve made some serious mistakes over the past few years. But I don’t let those mistakes get me down. I learn from them. I focus on what I did wrong, and try not to do it again. It’s all about improving yourself, and not focusing on the past. Like Kelly Clarkson, and Friedrich Nietzsche said, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. You have to learn from your mistakes, and be a better person because of it.
