Throughout the past few years of my life I have learned something that is very valuable. What I have learned is that every aspect of life will have an impact on my life at some point. Tragedy shapes who we are as individuals and as a community. Friedrich Nietzsche once said "That which does not kill us makes us strong". This quote is very true in life in many situations but he has left something out that I find important. What Nietzsche is saying is that every mishap in ones life is a learning experience. If a person makes a mistake then he or she should learn from it and grow as a person. The part I feel that he left out is those who are killed. When the unwelcoming hand of tragedy is dealt to us through the death of loved ones we must learn to accept this hand dealt. Only then are we truly made stronger because we as individuals grow by learning from the events and we mourn in a way never before. We as people are brought to a point emotionally that has never been experienced. We become more sensitive to the world around us and by this we learn to love one another. We learn how fragile and precious life is. The day someone realizes the shortness of life is the day a person truly starts living. They cherish each and every day because it might be their last. I am not saying tragedy is a good thing. Tragic deaths and events are terrible. But it is how we respond that can become an amazing thing and change lives in the future. Nietzsche was right in what he said but one must look deeper into this. There is so much valuable information within this quote that should model how we interact and live together. We must learn from not only our own mistakes but also the mistakes of others. Jimmy V died from cancer. It took his life. It made him no stronger. But Jimmy V was able to inspire others by accepting the truth of death and inspire people to better their lives. That is how we much become stronger. (366)
