I chose to write my personal narrative on the birth of my baby cousin, Oliver, this past January. My aunt had just recently started dating a new guy named Derrick, after a bad breakup with her old boyfriend. Soon after, she found out she was pregnant with Derrickís baby. My aunt, Mandy, has always had trouble when it came to dating. She had been in multiple abusive relationships. And she had already had a few miscarriages with other babies. So when I found out she was pregnant again, I figured the baby wouldnít live very long. But he did. He was born 2 months premature, and was really sick for a really long time. He spent around 3 months in the hospital, and I thought he might never come out. Oliver has changed my life. I picked his birth as a topic to write about because it has really opened my eyes about the fragility of a human life. But also what a miracle a human life could be. If you looked at Oliver now, at 8 months old, you would never expect that he was a premature baby. He is a happy, smiling little boy, and I adore him. Oliver has taught me that you can pretty much overcome anything, with the love and support of your family.
After Oliver was born, I went to go visit him in the NICU. I had never been there before, and the experience of spending just 20 minutes in there was life changing. When I walked in, all I saw was babies in either plastic box-like cribs, or babies in open cribs. Their parents and relatives sat around their cribs, talking and holding the babies. I knew when I walked into the NICU that I one day wanted to be a nurse, but when I walked out of there, I knew I one day wanted to work in the NICU. The nurses in there were spectacular, and I knew I wanted to be just like them. I wanted to help parents and their babies go through the struggle of having a sick baby, and I wanted to help them.
Another reason I picked Oliverís birth is because itís brought me closer to his mom. Mandy and I had never been really close, but his birth has brought us closer than we had ever been. I love little Ollie to death, and his life has changed my life.
