There have been numerous events in my life that say various things about my personality, but the one experience that stands out the most has got to be the first time I ever touched an instrument. Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of life changing experiences. There was the time I got hit in the head by an eight pound shot-put in track, which nearly killed me. Then there was the time I had brain surgery my senior year of high school. However, I never truly gained anything from those experiences. Other than a few stitches and a kick-ass morphine trip, both incidents were short-lived. Music, on the other hand, has been a major part of my life ever since the day my grandmother sat me down at a piano and taught me how to play Hot Cross Buns. Not only did it take me into another world where I could simply be myself, but it taught me how to be patient. It allowed me to channel the anger I had for my mother leaving, for my dad never really being there when I needed him, for when my girlfriend dumped me a week before our one-year anniversary. Instead, I sat and I played. I played and played and played to my heart's content until the ivory keys had rubbed my fingers raw and the lingering vibrations echoed throughout the house. Overall, I find that while I did not and still don't care about the fact that I had brain surgery, I definitely care about music, as it soothes my soul and ultimately makes me feel alive.
As for the reason why I chose it as my topic for the upcoming personal narrative assignment, I simply find music more complex than I do surgery. I mean, how am I supposed to write four pages about the fact that I had BRAIN surgery. Think about that. I had my head cut open to have a tumor removed, an operation that could have scrambled my thought processing altogether. Oh, and, guess what? That's all that happened. Yeah, it's scary, but it's also boring. That's exactly what the paper would have sounded like had I chose something that "changed me". But no, surgery didn't change me. Music, on the other hand, shaped me into what I am today. And that's something worth talking about.
