My experiences in previous English classes havenít been bad, but not necessarily beneficial. In my past English classes we had to write minimum papers that were mainly graded by other students so there wasnít a lot of professional help. If students are grading other studentís papers how are they learning? I can see how they can catch basic grammar issues but in reality all of the English students are primarily on the same level.
The reason I didnít really enjoy writing in high school was because the topics we had to use were so boring. Most of the papers we had to write were about books we just read. Why do we need to tell you about what we just read in class? I understand if the teacher was using this as a pop quiz or something beneficial like that. Most of the papers werenít graded on context but just on grammar. I feel like if I had more criticism on my writing style and not just my spelling I would be a stronger writer.
The one exception was my senior year; my teacher really helped me by allowing me to bring her my rough drafts in order to perfect my paper. When I was writing my paper for my senior project one thing I truly found helpful was having other teachers read and correct my paper.
One thing I truly struggle with is writing research papers. This is because in high school I only had to write one. Given the paper I had to write was about 9 pages long, I still didnít get that much practice. I wish in high school I could have learned better techniques on how to write well and efficiently.
I think the main things that will help me this semester will be rough drafts being able to be checked with you by appointment time. I think knowing a long time in advanced I will also be able to create a paper faster if I donít procrastinate. During open house and a little more detailed during orientation I heard about the writing lab. I talked to someone during orientation that suggested it was a great place to go to get help on planning, rough drafts, and proof reading. This semester Iím looking forward to increasing my sense of style in my writing and not just correcting my grammar.
