Yes. I would say that if it gets them to form connections, infer, start a discussion, or just about anything appropriate outside of just answering a classroom question from a teacher would be my definition. I think that this is a subjective thing. I just really want the students to be able to use reading as a catalyst for something in their lives instead of an activity to get finished.

I really like the topic of your research study. I have been trying to get my student to make specific connections with text that are above surface level as well. One of the things I have used this... more

Yes, I agree with Stacy. Our definition of making "real-world" connections just refers to the ability to think about what you are reading and make inferences about feelings of characters, cause and... more

That's a very interesting question, because if a student has decided that they are a "non-reader" then many of the interventions that include student motivation may not work as well. I see this alot... more

Stacy, Listening to you speak (or reading what you type) about those precious moments with students makes me want to be a student in your classroom. My senior AP English class was the first time I... more

Every school year, I agonize over whether or not I have done a good job in leading them to what is really important in reading. I believe that there is still so much work to do to get the students to ... more

Stacy, I also wonder if a key might be getting students to realize that even though a lot of what they do is technology based it is still steeped in the fundamentals of communication: reading,... more
            • That moment... - Rachel Yakey, Sun Nov 23 19:05
You both put it so beautifully that we, as teachers, want our students to connect to something as a human experience shared by others for the joy of the connection. :) Love it.
