I am excited to see how much these students grow over the course of the year. Concept of word was the first step to getting them reading. I hope to see their word recognition develop further and become more automatic so that they can begin reading texts on their own.

I loved using the word banks and so did my students. I would say this was the most motivated part of our lesson plan -- although we don't know for sure because we didn't ask the kids -- maybe I should ask them! The new words for their word bank came directly from the book that was being reread for a final time on a particular day -- so the child had read the book at least 3 times and had been asked previously to identify words in context (i.e. I pointed to the word and said "what's this word?"). The number of words they could collect each day varied depending on the book. Some students would get every word that I presented to them and others would just collect a few. It was cool to see the transition from when students were recognizing simple sight words (as, is, the, and) to when they began recognized pattern words by sight (cat, fan, pig, hat). This showed me that word study was also contributed to their sight word recognition. I think a sight word bank could be useful for any beginning readers -- essentially, you want them to have as many words represented in their memory so they do not have to decode them and can move more efficiently through text. If you do try it with your struggling readers in 7th grade, I'd love to hear how it goes!

Great presentation Ashley and Kasey! It is wonderful to see the things we are being taught applied to a classroom with success, especially the concept of word in correlation to a child's reading... more

Thank you, I will let you know how it works. It would be really cool to keep the data throughout the school year and see where your students end up at the end of the year. Will you be able to keep... more

I do have a teacher assistant in my room, but she works with the two groups of students who are on grade level or slightly above (12 students total). I will be able to keep groups going without Kasey ... more

Sweet! It is really nice to have that support. It would really have sucked to see your students decline just because of lack of teachers. :)
