Thanks for your kind words, Stacy! I have thoroughly enjoyed applying what I learned in the clinic to my classroom reading instruction. In primary grades, reading groups as where most of the reading instruction occurs.. I didn't really have to build in a separate reading time to fit the Early Steps lessons in -- I just used them in the time that I teach regular reading groups. Because the first graders in our study were beginning readers, they weren't ready to work with 1st grade texts where we would normally build decoding skills and practice comprehension...these little ones just needed to read simple texts over and over and over. I met with my groups of struggling readers 4 days a week and while they were with me or with Kasey, my other students were rotating through literacy stations (independent activities) or in their reading group with my Teacher Assistant. I think that it will certainly look different in a middle school class but think many of the components and strategies we learned in clinic could be applied. For example, I also have a "word study" time in my day that the whole class does, but they are working in leveled groups in patterns that meet their needs. I think this is something that could be done in any grade level and if you have 1st or 2nd grade readers, maybe the word bank could be a valuable strategy. Since your kids are a little older, many of the things that required my direct guidance may be able to happen in partners or small groups in middle school.

My class is doing word study in 3 different levels. We are also doing grouped guided reading. My classes are around 60 minutes, and I have found it a bit of a juggle to have ample reading time to... more
