Ashley Pennell
Teacher Assistant

All teacher assistants were trained in Early Steps years ago with a partnership? between ASU reading and Watauga County. I don't know specifically how all of that occurred since I wasn't in the county, but I do know that most TAs in the county are trained. This was also the case when I taught in Davie County and in some of the schools I was in in Forsyth County. The idea is that the assistants could pull a student to do Early Steps one-to-one each day. My assistant does do this with a student in my class. I have 8 students would leave during the day for Early Steps sessions (30 minutes). However, TAs have been trained to follow the program exactly as they were taught, verbatim and would likely not know how to adjust this to a small group to ensure success. For this reason, my assistant said she wanted to work with the on grade level students.
