In reference to this, I have had this discussion with colleagues and many of us have found that first exposing students to premade organizers is good. But then, allowing them the opportunities to draw/build them themselves actually requires them to think more critically about it. They tend to understand how it helps them map out their thoughts better. I feel like I've read some type of research about this too-- Where students should not be exposed to SO MANY different types of graphic organizers, but to a few, good solid ones that they can then use for their own purposes. I think, just like anything else in life, balance is key.
