I agree with Susan. The more I modeled the words in speech, the more comfortable the students became using the words. In my classroom, I saw a great deal of growth in the words they were using when they spoke (and they were just WAY more aware of "spicy words" all around them), however it didn't always transfer into their writing. It was interesting though because the kids in the student interviews overall felt like they grew more in their word choice in writing than in speaking. We also did some parent surveys about their child's language (we didn't get many of them back, so we didn't present that data). However, many parents noted that they noticed their child trying to use vocabulary words more often than they had before the study. I think that's due to the simple focus and excitement we presented them with.
