I think that targeting words before reading, even with students reading on or above grade level, will put them more at ease when reading the text (especially the first read). I try to point out words and do a quick "definition or meaning check" during the picture walk. I think this helps with fluency as well as comprehension. It is also a quick intervention and no additional materials are needed. I think this study has made me more aware of how necessary this kind of teaching is. I think that sometimes, who am I kidding, most of the time, I feel rushed and important steps are missed. This study will serve as an important reminder for me to slow down, even if it takes more time, and get it right.
