For me, it was very helpful to see not just teaching sight words in isolation but connected those sight words within connected text. This is something that I plan to continue throughout my instruction this year. Many of my students have IEP objectives related to high frequency words, I think rather than just reading through them on flashcards, I am going to be more purposeful in finding those words in texts that we will be reading and attempting to target them in this way. Also, the students really did enjoy using the Racetracks and I think it might be good independent center work to provide engaging practice and repetition.

My question is for both of you. In what ways will this intentional way of teaching impact how you move forward? I know that one of you has younger children and the other older, but how will this... more

I have been doing the word cards with my students. However, you guys have inspired me to be a bit more purposeful in making sure that the students can see the same types of patterns in their reading... more

Sight words in context was something that stood out to me in one of the last few videos we had to watch for our other class with Dr. Ward. In the past, I had simply thought of sight words as... more

I think that targeting words before reading, even with students reading on or above grade level, will put them more at ease when reading the text (especially the first read). I try to point out words ... more

I agree. I think that it reminds me that I still have some control over dealing with the academic issues that arise in my classroom. This gives me a tool to isolate a problem and document the things... more

I agree that teaching the targeted words seemed to help make the students more comfortable in the text especially if they know that they are going to encounter those words in the reading. I think... more

This is something I need to be sure I am doing with each of my groups. I can see how this would benefit students' reading fluency.

Have you ever heard of Ex-CELL. These great ladies from California have designed a process through their studies in doctoral work about ELLs and learning to read. Most of what they developed regards... more

I think you shared something about this for another class. But other than what you shared, I am unfamiliar with this particular method of pre-teaching vocabulary. Sounds interesting.
