You know this age group better than I, so I defer to your expertise with them. My suggestion would be to use the content of the stories to your advantage. Maybe come up with some kind of interest pole/survey on their level. Then use what they know to build the routine of thinking that way, and then you can do less familiar things and the thought patterns are already set without distress to the students. It is awesome to hear that things aren't as different as people may think between grade levels - learning is learning.
