I didn't send sorts home for them to practice at home, I did send home the sort once they glued it and I graded it so that their parents could see how they are doing. That is a great idea though!
My school doesn't use a specific reading program... we use Letterland to help teach letter names and sounds but as far as a reading program, no. For my class, a lot of instruction is done whole group, this is where we retell together, or sequence stories, learn sight words, etc. Reading groups are when we apply the skills learned in whole group. Of course, some small groups work on other things (like my focus group in the study worked more on letters and sounds because they didn't know it).
