I think that some of the things that we have learned in Dr. Ward's class speak to the transfer of speech to writing. I think it may have something to do with the ideas that speech develops first, so it is more difficult to form writing that is as rich as our thought and speech.

As far as suggestions, I defer to your expertise with your student's age group. I think I may try some form of notes like write a short note on a post it when you have a good idea during a conference. For example, when I am talking to Gus and his group, what if I had him take out post it notes before we start to talk? When he says something awesome, I can praise him for it and ask him to jot it down so he can use it later? Can your students try something similar?
