Being in Kindergarten, we are constantly assessing the mClass skills and knowledge of letters and letter sounds. Using the picture sorts in our study as a means of assessing, not only First Sound Fluency, but also letter and letter sound correspondence is a tool that I plan to continue to use each year. It is interactive and can be done over and over, in small groups or whole groups, or individually (in this case it can be glued down by the student so that I can check for accuracy and understanding). It is also something simple enough that can be sent home as a resource for parents to use. There are sorts for word families and final consonants that I can start now with my students who have mastered FSF. I also liked how Tavia and I organized our data; by writing on address labels and then later transferring it into a notebook, we were able to continue our instruction without worrying we would forget something important. I do plan to continue teacher inquiry to inform my teaching. Having an Autistic student who is weak academically has encouraged me to find research based approaches for learning letters and sounds. An Autism specialist has already been in contact with me, and together we are going to work together to try to help him.
