I collaborated with one of my co-workers, Tracy Cornacchio, at my school for my teacher research project. I learned what is meant by being a teacher researcher and I learned about my particular project and about my classmates’ projects. I could see what I had read about in theory first-hand and the importance of understanding the various phases of development of writing. I am glad that I have data I can show to others that makes what I do more credible. I learned from this project, that I can solve problems that come up in instruction and solve them through data I collected. I used this data to make changes in my instruction and to drive my intervention. From teacher research, I also learned that carefully analyzing data can also help lead to instructional decisions to benefit students. I believe I followed the proper process that the reading outlined and I think my teaching has improved because of it. From the process, I can make data into something I can use. The society has become so data driven and the school systems are the same. I have wanted to look for better ways to teach some things. This research project has helped me to understand the power of collaboration and the importance of professional conversations amongst all teachers. One of the biggest things I got from this project is the confidence gained in what I'm doing in the classroom. It helped me see that following interventions to teach writing helped. Participating in this project showed me the possibilities of my career as a teacher. It was wonderful to see the growth my students made after four weeks. I feel more comfortable with the instruction I use in my classroom. I think we do things in our classrooms that work, but we don't really look at or compare all of the data to show it is working. I see myself as a "giver of knowledge", a person who carries out the curriculum, and someone who makes well-informed, research-based decisions. I found how effective the Writing Workshop could be for me to teach writing in kindergarten. By doing this project I found The Writer’s Workshop possible in kindergarten and an effective way to teach writing. I struggled with teaching writing, but now haven proven the Writing Workshop is effective, I plan to continue using the interventions from the research plan since my students showed positive growth. I will use the Writer’s Workshop Skill Checklist and the conferences the same way I did during my research changing the skills on the checklist as needed.
