Will Selle Final Reflection

This has been a very great experience for me as well. Also, with my colleague and research partner, I've definitely stepped out of my comfort zone and am very grateful that all of you Reading folks have taken me under your wing!

From this process, I learned the incredible value of conveying clear and well designed research that promotes education. At first I was daunted by this task, because of the "research" that I had read and studied from past college professors, and the thought that I was going to have to produce something in this course that stacked up to "conventional" educational research. Even at the conclusion of this project, I feel that there are many questions we still left unanswered, and I can't help but feeling this this sense that the research I produced is not valid, carries little worth, and would need mountains of revision before being published, if ever.

After reading the final article by Stremmel, I felt much more at ease with the intent and outcome of my project. I've already shared my paper and presentation with colleagues, friends, and even some of my high school level students.

Through the process of this action research project, I've become less skeptical on the subject of quantitative research. Due to the abstract and obscure nature of some educational scenarios, it became clear to me that, especially in Reading, its hard to put a number on certain aspects of learning. Comprehension for example, is so subjective. I was enlightened to see all of the strategies, data collection methods, and assessment tools that my classmates used in their research. This is definitely something that I will act upon in the future.

In the future, I'd like to continue the scope of the study that Jessica and I started. I'd like to track the literacy data and progress of music students over multiple years to further investigate correlations of fluency and literacy in languages. Through class discussion, many class members suggested that I compare music instruction to mathematics-this could prove as fruitful as the correlations to language learning in music. I will definitely be collaborating more with my Reading and Math colleagues in the future!

Thanks again everyone for including me in your learning community! This was my last course requirement for my Master's degree, and I couldn't have asked for a better culmination to my graduate program. Peace!
