As of right now, I am leaning towards doing the compare and contrast option for the paper. I struggle with doing literary analyses when using theme as the guiding light. Also, as we read the stories, I have been able to detect similarities and differences, which will help with my writing process since I do not really plan out my papers.

I think I am going to write on “Big Game” and “Carnal Knowledge.” Writing about the stories seems to come naturally to me. Their similarities and differences just jump out at me. They seem easier to write about too. While I do not have a problem choosing challenging topics, choosing these two stories just seems to be the smarter option right now. Being the true procrastinator that I am, it would probably be a good idea to stick with these stories.

I think Boyle is trying to tell us there are always people on two different ends of the spectrum. There are people who do not care about animals and see them as recreation. There are people who care entirely too much that they do not think about how their actions, in attempts to save animals, will affect the animals. Boyle does not respect either group of people. He sides more with people in the middle. People who care about animals but do not go out of their way to kill them. In “Big Game,” I think Boyle is telling readers that people like the Benders are people he could care less about, hence ending the story with a victory for Bessie Bee. In “Carnal Knowledge,” Boyle shows readers the opposite end of the spectrum. Boyle writes Aleena as someone who has her heart in the right places but does not think everything all the way through, i.e. destroying biomedical research labs and freeing the turkeys. Boyle wants people to be more so in the middle; maybe animal rights advocates who have thought out plans for saving animals from animal cruelty. I think Boyle, even may, be trying to convey to readers that animals should be respected. Which is why he writes “Little Fur People.” He writes Grace as someone likable but still draws a line with her. He respects what she is doing, but draws the line at her keeping them as her “babies.” Overall I think Boyle wants people to realize that there has to be a middle ground for anything anyone believes in. It cannot be on the far right or the far left of the spectrum.
