The TC Boyle Paper prompt that I have decided to write about was the second option. I would like to choose two papers with the same recurring theme. The stories that I am going to choose are The Human Fly and On for the Long Haul. The themes that are recurring are obsession and greed.
I enjoy these stories because they both are very interesting and even though, I knew that both of the men were going to die, the way they died still had some thrill to it. Even though the characters are different, the themes are similar and that is another reason I chose these stories.
As we discussed in class, Boyle is saying that obsession is unhealthy. In both of the stories, the main character became obsessed over something and well, it ended up killing them. In On for the Long Haul, Bayard became obsessed with protecting his family and made them move so they would be safe from the world ending. By doing this, he actually put his family in even more danger and he was killed. In Human Fly, Zoltan became obsessed with being famous that he didn’t care if his stunts would kill him. He would rather be famous and died than alive and a nobody. His last stunt squashed him like a fly.
The other theme that both of these stories have is greed. I believe that Boyle thinks agents are greedy and that people just want money and don’t care about others well-being or safety. In both stories, the agent just wants the other person’s money. In On for the Long Haul, Arkson doesn’t care about Bayard and his family. He just wants there money and even puts another person next to the family even after the man kicks Bayard’s child and threatens to kill him. In Human Fly, the agent just wants Zoltan’s money and doesn’t care that all of the stunts should kill him and one even does. At the end of the story when Zoltan dies and the agent is at his funeral, the agents says that Zoltan’s uncle is the only mourner at the funeral. He still doesn’t care that his client died because of Zoltan dying, he has more clients and more money.
