I have chosen to write a compare and contrast paper for my Boyle paper assignment. The two stories that I chose to write about were Carnal Knowledge and Modern Love. Both of these stories share similar traits including a man, somewhere in his thirties, attempting to find love where ever he can find it. He just happens to find this “love” in the form of a crazy, yet hot, woman with odd hang-ups. The attractive women all have unique quirks that the men go along with to have sex with them. In Modern Love, Breda is a germaphobe who avoids any and all physical contact, even during sex with a man who she thinks she loves. She goes as far to make the narrator have a complete physical examination to prove he has no illnesses for her to continue their relationship. In Carnal Knowledge, Alena is a vegan eco-terrorist who is determined to fight for animal rights. The narrator and her go protesting and end up setting up a plan to go free turkeys from a turkey farm. However, Alena has no plan for the turkeys once they are free and the turkeys end up smashed alongside the road by a truck. Neither of these stories are like typical love stories, in the end both men are left alone and most likely contemplating their decisions leading them up to that point. These stories show Boyle’s views on what “love” really is. He believes that men are all about sex and will jump through any kind of hoops to get it. For example, in Modern Love, the narrator is willing to have sex in a full body condom. In Carnal Knowledge, the narrator goes to protest against people who wear fur despite him not really caring. He even gets knocked out by a brutal ex kick boxer. Does that stop him? Nope. He even goes to save some turkeys which get killed anyways. And throughout the stories, both men are trying to convince themselves that what they’re doing for “love” is justified. We don’t need Boyle to tell us that what they’re doing is wrong. These stories tell me that Boyle thinks love is just a justification for a specific means.
