I have decided to write my Boyle paper on two stories from the love section of the book—Modern Love and Cardinal Knowledge. Through out my essay, I will discuss the similarities and differences of the two stories. These stories are similar because they both involve a man in his thirties desperate for sex. Both men finally get what they have been desiring, however it is with younger hot girls with very quirky and odd problems. For example, in Modern Love the narrator has to put on a full body condom to have sex with his germ a phobic girlfriend, Bredda. Also, in Cardinal Knowledge Jim has to give up meat and start protesting against animal cruelty for his vegan girlfriend, Alena. Both men are willing to put up with these absurd rules set by their girlfriends because Bredda and Alena are clearly out of their leagues. The key difference in these stories is how far each of the men is willing to go. The narrator of Modern Love even confesses his “love” for Bredda in a last effort to get her to come back to him. This is different then Jim however. At the end of Cardinal Knowledge, Alena also leaves Jim and Jim’s last thoughts are “it’s only meat”. Clearly, this shows the reader that Jim could really care less about Alena and was just in it for the sex, and he will quickly move on. Both of these stories express Boyle’s opinions on love. Boyle thinks that men will do anything for sex, no matter how crazy the circumstances. Also, that he does not believe in true love. By developing each of the characters separately, and then connecting them together will help support my analysis of Boyle’s opinion on love. Each of these stories has the same plot. A desperate guy puts up with a crazy hot girl for sex. The difference is how far each of them is willing to go. The hardest part of the essay will be making this difference clear. By using quotes from each story will help develop each character and get Boyle’s point across affectively.
