For my paper I plan to write about “On for the Long Haul” and “The Human Fly”. Those two stories have similar themes of obsession and greed. The theme that I plan to use for it is that obsession and greed are characteristics that never lead to good results whether it is two separate people experiencing one characteristic and the other person has the other characteristic or if it’s just one person shows both characteristics.

For “On for the Long Haul” obsession is shown through Bayard Wemp who is doing anything possible to get himself away from his home and to find isolation away from the terrible fate he feels his town of Los Angeles awaits. He decides to have his appendix taken out when there is nothing wrong with it at all just to be on the safe side. Another sign of him being obsessed is that he spends about half a million dollars to get he and his family away and into a three room cabin. Where the greed kicks in is with his agent Arkson who just cares for the money that Bayard has to offer. Arkson forgets Bayard when he comes back to where Bayard has moved is one sign that he is greedy and only cared for the money. Another sign is when during the same occasion he forgot Bayard he had another client Cullum who threatened to kill Bayard and meant it and Arkson heard the threat and yet he moved Cullum in right next door to Bayard.

For “The Human Fly” the obsession is shown through Zoltan who is desperate to become famous. He is at the point where he has a death wish just so he is able to become famous by doing incredibly dangerous stunts such as strapping himself to the wing of a plane or riding on the axle of a giant 18-wheeler. Through stunts such as these you can see where he has become obsessed with becoming famous even if it leads to his death. Where greed kicks in is with the agent Zoltan hires. Before the agent had only a few clients who weren’t in any way famous and he figured Zoltan would be the key for him to reach the top. He became greedy through allowing his client to go through these stunts even though he knew that Zoltan was becoming weaker and weaker after each stunt, but he knew that Zoltan was gaining attention so it was helping his image rise. In the end he allowing Zoltan to follow through with each stunt led to his death. Another sign that he didn’t care for Zoltan and just the publicity and money that he would receive is that at the funeral the uncle of Zoltan was the only mourner.
