I am writing my Boyle paper as a theme paper about “Carnal Knowledge” and “Modern Love”. In this paper I’m going to explain how Boyle thinks men that are desperate for sex will do almost anything to get it from a hot younger girl. There is a lot of evidence in each story to support my claim. For example in Carnal Knowledge the main character meets a girl who is a vegan and he completely stops eating meat the day he meets her. Not only does he stop eating meat he also calls in sick to work thinking they will spend the day having sex, but instead she drags him to a protest which he goes along with. Another piece of evidence is that he goes on a trip with her to free Turkeys before Thanksgiving and when she proceeds to make out with an old man in front of him he still stays and doesn’t do anything about it. Along with that expedition he is left behind, spending the night in the woods with mud and Turkey poop all over him; yet when she comes back to get him he is angry but still stays. The last piece of evidence is that when they get back to the cabin she tells him that her and the old man are leaving to go save grizzly bears and asks him to leave and water her plants. At this point he does leave and on his way he ends up stopping to get meat thinking to himself “it’s only meat”, which is a reference to her just being a girl he wanted to have sex with and nothing more. Modern Love also has many examples, like the fact that the narrator continues to take Breda on dates for a month before he gets a first kiss. Another example is that he is willing to put on a full body condom to have sex with her, and continues to do it because it is the only way she will do it. He also is willing to get tested by her doctor for everything you could possibly think of simply because she asks him to. The last piece of evidence that he is only interested in having sex with her is that when she leaves him he says “I love you”, when he has never said it before, along with “we were so close”, referring to so close to having sex without the condom which is what his goal was all along.
