I'm writing my theme paper on Modern Love and Carnal Knowledge. I think that both of the stories have very revealing themes on Boyle's take on love and sex. In the story Modern Love we are introduced to a man whose first thought was about sex. The very first sentence of the story shows his contempt for the fact that there was no exchange of bodily fluids on the first date. He also expresses no emotions towards the girl until he can no longer have her as an option for sex. Once she tell him that it is over he tells her that he loves her. In the story carnal knowledge we have another man who is mainly interested in sex. However, in this story he gets it on the first date and continues to see her for the sex. Both of the girls in the stories have pretty major hang ups that the men go along with anyway. In Modern Love the girl is germaphobic who takes it way too far. She prefers places that you can smell the cleaner and requests that the man wears a full body condom until he can be checked by a doctor to ensure that he is completely clean. In Carnal Knowledge the girl is a ecoterrorist who is not intelligent. She destroys files in a lab which will only cause more testing to have to be done. She also releases turkeys into the wild, which is near a highway. The turkeys ended up splattered across the highway in worse condition then they would have been in their cages. Based on the stories Boyle has written about love I think his view is a little twisted. All of the love stories we have read from him have a girl that s crazy and a man who gets into a relationship just to have easy access to sex. The men in the stories will put up with just about anything to keep their girls around. I think that Boyles take on love is a pretty modern representation of how most people view love today.
