For me, I have had more bad experiences with my English classes than positive. All throughout grade school in my English classes the teachers would just assign work to be done and would just want to get us out of the class as quickly and easily as possible. This would include allowing the students multiple times to re-do any assignments that they may have done awful on to just completely giving them a better grade than what was deserved. Seeing this through school made me start to despise English even more knowing that it was a subject that none of the teachers really cared for, so that mindset began to rub off on me. When it came to writing assignments, we hardly did any. My senior year of high school I recall only doing one writing assignment that was just awful. It was an assignment that was nothing but pointless busy work, and there were hardly any connections of the paper to what we were learning. What I find beneficial though is that since there were hardly any writing assignments, we spent time learning more on grammar, then that’s when the least beneficial part begins to kick in. With all the learning spent on grammar we hardly learned how to write a paper. We didn't learn what readers want and expect from the papers that we write and how to approach it. We didn't learn when to write to inform, persuade, or entertain our readers which is a major part of writing a paper. It will be tough not learning any of that and stepping into a class that is writing intensive. What I expect different in this semester is that the grading will be stricter but along with having an instructor that cares about helping to improve student’s writing abilities as long as we show we want to improve. Also I expect to have many more writing assignments than I probably have had in the last six years of grade school and that is a challenge I look forward to. I look forward to that due to the fact that writing is an essential part of our lives that we need to take serious. In the professional world there will be multiple times that you will find yourself writing whether it be a résumé, an inquiry, or a written form of promotion. When it comes down to it if we can’t take our writing serious, then how can we expect our readers to take us serious?
