3/6 Discussion

I am writing my paper on the stories Modern Love and Carnal Knowledge. I picked these stories based on their similarities and my interest in the stories themselves. Modern Love is a story that has a man desperate for “love” and an attractive woman with “hang-ups” where the man ends up losing the woman. Carnal Knowledge is a story with a man desperate for “love” and yet another attractive woman with baggage. Both stories have similar characters but there are a few differences. These stories give us a clear picture of Boyle’s view on relationships in this day and age.
There is many things in the story to support my belief that Boyle thinks modern relationships are a cat and mouse game where men are just looking for sex and women’s standards are extremely high. The first piece of evidence in Modern Love is on the very first page of the story when the narrator, who is intentionally not given a name by Boyle to generalize him into a male stereotype, the first the detail that the character shares is that “there was no exchange of bodily fluids on the first date, which suited us both just fine”. This being the first things that the character says gives the reader the inclination that it is, in fact, not “perfectly fine”. Another piece of evidence in Modern Love is when the male character meets Breda’s doctor, he jumps through every hoop that he is thrown including a full body condom, awful dates, and boring conversations about exotic disease and then just when he thinks things are going well, Breda drops him like a sack of rocks because of something that happens with her doctor.
The evidence to support my interpretation of Boyles’ opinion on modern relationships in Carnal Knowledge is very similar. The first piece of evidence is that the main character “must have dosed off” because when he woke up he had been “pissed on” by the dog of the woman, Alena Jorgenson. This is evidence that supports my opinion because instead of yelling at her for not keeping track of her dog he FLIRTS with her because she is attractive. He then gets knocked out protesting for her cause and trampled by turkeys all to be with a woman who also decides that he hasn’t jumped through her hoops well enough.
