In the TC Boyle paper, I am writing on On for the Long Haul and the Human Fly. I am doing a theme paper where I focus on obsession and greedy agent. My inference from both stories is that Boyle thinks that both of these themes are unhealthy.
In On for the Long Haul, Bayard was obsessed with keeping his family and himself safe. He got his appendix taken out even though nothing was wrong with it. He moved his family and took his daughters out of school so they would be “safe”. He even spent half a million dollars. His obsession was completely unhealthy and in the end, he was killed.
In Human Fly, Zoltan was obsessed with being famous even if it killed him. He would do crazy stunts like sitting on a ledge for two weeks and would not get down unless the news was there. Then he attached himself to a moving plane on the wing and was hit by a crow. The last and final stunt was him being underneath a trunk and then jumping 26 trucks. This obsession killed him in the last stunt.
In both stories, the agents are greedy and very selfish. In On for the Long Haul, Arkson is the agent that tells people that the world is going to end. He tells them that they can move to these certain locations so they will be safe but they have to pay him a lot of money. When he brought Cullum to the where Bayard lives, he didn't even remember who Bayard is. Arkson didn't care that Cullum said that he was going to kill Bayard. He just wants Cullum’s money and doesn't care about anyone but his self.
In Human Fly, the agent also only cared about himself and just wanted money. Zoltan died from the last stunt and the agent said that at the funeral, Zoltan’s uncle was the only moaner there. He didn't even care that his best client died. He was actually happy because of Zoltan’s death gave him more clients which gave him more money.
Boyle clearly showed that obsession is healthy and that most agents are greedy and don’t care about anyone but themselves.
