There were many differences between the Boyle paper and the personal narrative but the biggest difference in my personal opinion was the intended purpose of the papers. The personal narrative was a personal experience that we were telling the reader in the form of a story, while the Boyle paper was an analysis of Boyle’s thoughts and why we believed he thought these things based on the text. This made the personal narrative much easier to write for me personally because I had never written a literary analysis before and because the personal narrative was part of my own memory and emotional experience which is much easier to describe in detail.
The narrative was much easier for me to write because I knew, prior to learning in class, how to organize a story. In high school I was not taught how to organize a literary analysis, not having this prior knowledge made writing a successful paper more difficult. I also felt much more connected to the personal narrative because it is after all my personal experience, I found that it was much easier to go on and on about things that happened to me rather than describing what someone else thinks.
This being said I think my biggest weakness in writing the Boyle paper is lack of experience. I have written countless numbers of stories in my life, but this being my very first literary analysis there is NO way that it was my best. Practice with writing literary analysis will greatly improve my ability to write them in the future. Some of my strengths while writing this paper were my ability to form opinions based on context clues and the ability to write with fluidity. I believe that my ideas, while they may not have been the best analysis of Boyle’s story in cookie cutter form, were organized relatively well and formed based on the proof in the story. I supported each of my ideas with strong textual support and cited the source. So my paper may not be the best, but I believe writing this paper has given me a basic knowledge of literary analysis and has certainly left room for significant improvement.
