Argument Paper

For my argument paper I plan to write about gun control. The topic of gun control has been very popular in the past few years so I know there will be plenty of research available to me to help support my claim. I believe that there is no purpose in disarming the public, the only outcome would be a helpless public against the unlawful carriers. If someone wishes to harm someone with a gun the last thing they are concerned with is obtaining that gun legally. Anyone who wants to harm another is going to do so even if they can not obtain the gun. Increasing the process of getting a gun legally is only stopping the people who have a good reason for the gun such as self defense or home defense. Growing up in the south I've heard many stories of black market gun sales, if anything should be stopped it should be the people trying to go around the system to obtain their fire arm. I feel the people against guns in our country should spend more of their time stopping the actual illegal activity rather than trying to make the process of self protection harder. Trying to take away the public's fire arms infringes on the public's constitutional rights to carry fire arms not just to protect themselves but others as well. Many of the counter arguments are that if the public has no guns there will be far less gun violence such as school shootings. Another counter argument is that the public has no reason to carry guns since we have a system in place of police to protect us. I can understand how to some people that makes sense, less guns should equal less gun violence, but that's only looking at the problems surface. I don't think that they are looking at what it would do to the public to have no rights to protect themselves or others in a time of need. The less protection the public has the easier it is for someone to commit a horrific crime such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. I believe that a public who legally carries fire arms is much safer than those who do not.
