The topic I am considering is police officers should not be forced to wear body cameras. This side interests me the most as my plans for future include joining some type of law enforcement. Having body cameras on all police officers impedes the judgement that they use. When officers know that their every movement and decision is being judged by either their supervisors or the public eye, their behavior changes. Instead of an officer following what he believes to be right, his judgement is clouded and he could potentially either get himself hurt or killed, or someone else. Another big reason why I believe police officers should not wear cameras is that just like eye witness testimony, video evidence can be interpreted in many different ways, and to the prejudices and assumptions of individual viewers. Cameras are already a growing concern for issues of privacy, why would people want more cameras? Many believe that officers act rashly or without thinking about repercussions, what they do not understand is it is easy to say that someone should not have done something because they werenít in the situation. Cameras honestly will make no difference when it comes to using it as evidence. Police will only moderate their actions if they believe the camera will mean that if they do something wrong they will be held accountable. If the police officers believe they will get away with it due to the police standing with their own, or simply the footage not being viewed, then the technology will make little to no difference. On the other side of the spectrum, there are many who believe that all police officers should wear body cameras because it keeps cops from acting too rashly. This is true as it could stop officers from acting overly aggressively or harassing an individual. Cameras on cops can restore the peopleís trust in the cops. There are a large percent of Americans who go out of their way to bash cops in any way they can. Another argument is that cameras can help reduce complaints. Not only will it make the police officers behave better, but members of the public wonít be so quick to complain when they know they can be very easily proven wrong.
