Well I was considering two topics: IDís should be required when voting and Drug testing should be required for welfare recipients. Requiring an ID to vote would substantially cut down on the amount of voting fraud that occurs in the U.S. Each year, somehow the votes of dead citizens end up making there way in the ballet. This causes unfair elections and sways the vote into a given candidates direction. How are we supposed to have any say in our elected officials if the voting ballets are being tampered with? Some people think that requiring IDís to vote would somehow make voting difficult for certain races therefore they protest the idea on account of racism. Another counter argument is that people canít afford government issued identification. This argument is invalid since 49 states offer IDís for 10$ and there is a federal free ID program for those who are homeless, on welfare, on unemployment, mentally or physically ill, etc. Today in class we discussed that the first topic I picked could be construed as racism therefore it was advised that I should stick with topic two. My argument for the drug testing in order to receive welfare stems from the fact that all working Americans must pass a drug test in order to obtain a job therefore it should be no problem for people to drug test for free money. Of course I would do more research on the topic but it just seems reasonable to me because it keeps addicts off of welfare that they would most likely blow on drugs. If we save money that way, we could use it to better our economy or even give a little more welfare to those who are more deserving. Many have argued that the drug test would be a violation of privacy, but those who are in need of the assistance shouldnít mind and if they do then they could just stay away from welfare. It really is that simple. I also looked at other interesting topics ranging from stem cell research being justifiable to political topics. Nothing is set in stone just yet. All of the topics in the Issues and Controversies database were really interesting and backed by quite a bit of research.
