My final topic for the argument paper is animals should not be kept in captivity. Animals in captivity suffer from psychological issues, abuse, lack of care, and they earn for their natural habitat. One side of this argument is that animals should not be captive because it is harmful to their wellbeing in every aspect. For example, animals die at a young age, suffer from mental illnesses such as zoochosis, and experience cruelty. Overall, the animal does not come first while captive; people do which is not right. The opposing side to this argument is that keeping animals in captivity helps preserve their species from becoming extinct. Also, animal facilities provide a chance for people to learn about wild animals up close. Lastly, zoos and other animal captivity places bring in a lot of money and is a big business. I chose that animals should remain in their natural habitat because they deserve to have a life and not be locked up in a cage so people can be entertained. Animals also suffer abuse through beatings or starvation. I do not think that it is fair to deprive animals from their natural habitat by placing them in artificial ones. There was a lot of information on this topic because it involves all different types of animal facilities. Finding statistics and examples was easy, however a lot of websites were blogs and people’s opinions. This issue is becoming more relevant to the public so there is a lot of media covering the subject. I used websites such as PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. This website was very helpful because it is all about protecting animals in everyway. I also used National Geographic, which provided statistics as well as relevant information. For my print source I referred to the New York Times. I also looked at many other websites that gave different opinions and aspects of the issue. This helped me narrow down my search and help me decide on what points to really focus on. I enjoyed learning about this topic because when people visit zoos, circuses, or other animal facilities the animal’s well being is often forgotten. I think it is important for everyone to learn about what really goes on behind the cages of these animals.
