For my argument paper, I decided to pick the topic pertaining to standardized testing and how it is not a true depiction of ones learning capability. Having gone through the SAT and ACT, I feel as if it was not a full representation of my abilities throughout grade school. One test should not be a determining factor of how well I can obtain information. The two sides are that standardized tests are allowing students in various areas to be compared without bias. The side I am arguing is that these standardized tests do not correctly show the intelligence of one student with one exam or the school as a whole. Each teacher tried to prepare us for the SAT but each one did it a different way. If we do poor on the SAT or ACT the teacher is looked upon as a bad teacher, which is not fair at all. Me personally, I have very bad anxiety when I take any test or exam. Since I did poor my first go round on the SAT it represents me poorly when I was an above average student in high school. I feel very strongly about this topic because it affected me individually. Each question on the SAT is multiple-choice besides the short essay question. Multiple-choice questions do not allow us to grasp concepts deeper and understand them. Anyone can randomly pick an answer and get it right. I feel like our progress and work through high school should determine where we got into college. I had an above average GPA but a low SAT and ACT score, which eliminated two of my top colleges, which I applied too. I know if I had gotten into them, I would excel but I was not given the opportunity. While searching my topic a few sources that helped me were sites online with statistics. It shows percentages of students here in North Carolina and the averages of how students do on the tests. I have not found a printed source yet which supports my argument yet. North Carolina education websites have also been very helpful.
