My final topic for the argument paper was the topic of: Should NCAA pay college athletes to play? The two, and only two sides of this argument are either yes or no. The NCAA should or shouldn’t pay college athletes. Being that I have a great interest in sports, I had no problem writing about this topic. Although I am not a college athlete I have engaged in discussion about this topic in the past and still do to this day. I stand firm by my side when I say that I completely disagree with the idea of paying college athletes. College athletes sign a National Letter of Intent, which sums up that they understand that they will be playing for the university. Within this the athletes understand that they will now be apart of the university and that it will not be an easy task but it was their choice. Once again no athlete was forced to sign this or play sports at the collegiate level. It was a choice that not only them but also their family has made. If athletes are to be paid then it will make it seem as if they are working for the organization and not playing for them. Also, if athletes were to be paid then they would be on the same level as the professionals. This is highly inaccurate because as a professional that it their job, and that is all they do. College athletes are students first and athletes second and it is the job of the NCAA to integrate the two together. The main source that has really been helpful to me is the actual issue and controversies website. The one thing I like about this resource is that it provides both arguments and valid points and statistics to support both sides. Also, it provides links to other websites that allow you to access further information on the topic. Another website that has greatly assisted me is the NCAA website because it has provided their outlook on the whole idea which is the most important. Also, it has many other statistics that assist me in making my argument. While the web has really been helpful, I do have to be careful because there are a lot of opinionated articles and editorials out there which aren’t useful to me.
