Argument paper
Fri Apr 17, 2015 3:55pm

The process of writing the argument paper was unlike most other writing assignments Iíd done in the past. I found that I actually spent more time on the research portion than typing it all up. I started by reading endless articles and news reports about the controversy over gun control and what each sideís supporters promoted and felt strongly about. The tedious process continued as I read through FBI databases looking for statistical support and even doing my own calculations to base claims on. The immense amount of time I did before I had even type a word of the paper itself, definitely helped in the long run. In doing so, I created a sort of outline to easily refer to when actually writing it started. As I went deeper and deeper into some of the key issues that gun control poses, I found more evidence to put in my paper and use.
The greatest challenge (besides the works cited page) was finding valid statements that were backed by relevant statistical evidence. Since gun control is such a media heavy issue, the amount of people who stated so called ďfactsĒ opposing it, or in support of gun control, was extensive. With that being said, I feel like the evidence I did find and use were key to supporting my own claims, making that a strong point of my paper. Iím not concerned with any specific parts of my paper, except for maybe grammatical errors and or the overall voice that it portrays. Iíd like to think that I have a certain voice most of my essays or papers contain, but when itís a research paper, I feel like there is a lack of personality that takes away from the overall voice. However, knowing that your narrative voice isnít exactly what is important in a research-based paper, I donít think that should take away from the quality of it as a whole. It was an interesting contrast between the narrative essay where the writing was from the heart and your own memories, thoughts and emotions to portray a story, whereas in this, it was based off of someone elseís.
