In high school I was placed into AP English and it was dreadful. There were so many papers for that class and starting out my paper grades were terrible. As time went on my papers hit a stop and they were graded the same for about 3 weeks. The grade I kept receiving was a seven out of 9 because there was not enough detail in the paper for my teacher. Every paper that was assigned had to deal with literary analysis. I am now a pretty good detailed writer, when I actually pay attention to what I am saying. Literary analysis is the most beneficial part of the class. There were also other good things that I obtained from the class, such as vocabulary. When you learn more vocabulary words it is easier to add vivid details in the next literary analysis paper assigned. My first semester of college I was enrolled in English 1000 and I did not learn one thing. She tried to cram words down our throats at the last minute so that we could do well on an assignment that was given by the English department. I wrote six short essays for the class and they were not graded until the class was over, so I still donít know why I received the grades I did. The most beneficial thing I learned form that class had nothing to do with English. I also learned and retained about 15-20 facts about the countries of India, Mexico, and China. I felt learning those facts about other countries was a waste of time. The class was an easy A, for my first semester of college. Considering the class was a global understanding course, I learned how to ask questions about people from different cultures without sounding too rude. For example, if I had a stereotype question, it would be awkward to ask but we went over ways to approach the topics nicely. I hope to brush up on my vocabulary skills in this class, as well as go over some literary analysis. Hopefully, I will learn more about how good or bad my writing is in professor Bates English class.
