I never had anything but good experiences in my previous english classes. Attending a small high school repeatedly gave us one on one time with our teachers. I had the same teacher for three years of english and three years on the yearbook staff. He made it very easy for students to want to share their work and really helped us get confident in that aspect. Much like the way this class is, my english teacher only spoke in sarcasm, so this class actually feels very familiar. One of the best things he taught me was to not be afraid to turn in rough drafts to get help. I used to never want to give a teacher work I knew wouldn't be the best in fear that it would hurt my grade, but I realized that by turning it in and getting those comments, it was eventually helping me to turn it into my best work. Another great thing we started doing my junior year was with our book assignments. We all had to read the same books that were in our curriculum but instead of writing just a broad analysis of that book, we were always asked to compare it to something in our life. By doing this I really got a better understanding of the message the author wanted you to get rather than just picking out themes and elaborating on them. The thing I found to be the least beneficial was when we read as a class. We didn't do that often but when we did I felt like the class was never going to end. I read best on my own pace. Having to wait on slower readers and people to pronounce the words right, would distract me and make me lose focus on what we were supposed to be doing. Senior projects are also a part of high school english that are not beneficial towards anything. Many students would procrastinate and put it off as long as they possibly could. This caused stress and a lot of unnecessary work. While I understand why we have them and the lessons they are supposed to teach us about those very problems, those lessons can also be accomplished with just the paper. Personally, I think my final research paper was the best work I ever turned in throughout all of high school. My english teacher grilled us on the importance of that paper and how it actually prepared us for college. I feel this class will be different in many ways. The course load and level of difficulty are much higher than that of just a regular honors english course. Being a journalism major, I am always looking for ways to improve my writing and I believe this class will help tremendously.
