While I definitely can attest to both quotes I can relate more to “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” –Friedrich Nietszche. First, if I was asked to define this quote I would say that everything in life can be seen as a learning experience. I can most identify with this quote because my life hasn’t always been easy, but I never let that deter me from still moving on. One event in my life that really had an impact on me was my senior year in high school when I was not accepted into my top college choice: Syracuse University. The reason I wanted to attend Syracuse was because it has the top Communications school in the nation and that is major. My high school holds an annual college interview day and I made sure that I spoke with the representative from Syracuse. After showing her my transcript she was thoroughly impressed and even offered me on the spot admission, so the next step was to simply apply. She assured that I would be accepted but when I got the letter via email I was completely disgusted to see that I had been waitlisted. How? People with grades worse than mine were accepted but I was waitlisted. Not only was I confused but I was pretty upset and so I emailed the same representative. She responds saying she is sorry to hear that but the school of communications is really competitive and I would’ve been accepted had I applied undecided then declared my major. But she didn’t say that when she was at my school! Long story short, I came to realize that if it was meant to be that it will some day happen but nonetheless I will make sure I am successful no matter what university I attend. After waiting to hear back from them I then found out that I was deferred and this really saddened me. I knew I had to make a decision and that it when I chose East Carolina. A lot of family and friends were telling me that everything happens for a reason but I couldn’t figure out why it happened like this. I had my mind set my entire senior year on Syracuse only to be deferred. However, I came to realize that it isn’t always about the university but what you make out of the experience. I didn’t let this denial make or break me but I simply took it on the chin and proceeded to move on. I agree with Nietszche 100%, if whatever happens doesn’t physically kill you then it is something you can learn from and it can even serve as motivation.
