My personal narrative paper was about the passing of my Aunt Honey due to a drunk driver, and the lessons I took away from it. Throughout this whole experience I learned about love, decision-making, maturity, and of course, not to get behind the wheel intoxicated. I think my paper gets my point across clearly and is includes vivid details of what went on during that time of my life. I believe the strongest aspect of my paper is that it came directly from the heart and is very sincere; rather than trying to make a story out of nothing. However, I am nervous that the event I choice can come across as a stereotypical drunk driving story. Drunken driving stories often have the same lessons, or tone to the story; therefore I am nervous that my story will not stand out and connect with the reader.
Writing papers usually is a long and tedious process for me. I began the writing process by narrowing down my topics and finally choosing my story of Aunt Honey. Then I made a bubble graph to try and narrow down what I was going to focus on and organize my thoughts. I actually made two of these because the first one was not specific enough. Then I began to write my paper, and I started with the body paragraphs. While writing, I began to realize different things I took away from the accident, wake and funeral. I changed what perspectives and impacts I would focus on through out the paperóending up with the importance of family, decision-making, and maturity. I wrote my entire paper, waited a day and then went back and rewrote it and fixed it. I did this process 4 times. My last step was meeting with Professor Bates to get a different viewpoint on my story.
The main issue with my paper, I learned, was it did not flow smoothly. After meeting with Professor Bates, I took his corrections and applied them to my paper. I changed around the order of some events and added in my paragraphs. My narrative paper is one of the first papers I am actually proud of and think I did my best on. I also think that my writing process helped me organize my details and made me have more of a particular focus.
