I can only remember being taught important skills in high school English classes my junior and senior year. These two classes were AP or ďcollege levelĒ classes.
My junior year, our class was a year long and was complete torture. While I was taught valuable information, it wasnít about English. She showed me how closed minded people can be and how pregnant women do not handle criticism well. While taking the class, the Presidential Election was occurring. One of our assignments was for each person to debate about a hot topic with another classmate. Some topics were raising taxes, gay marriages, or abortion. I was given raising taxes on the rich and had to write a speech and present it to the class.
The only issue with this is was that since she was a very close minded woman, if you didnít have the same view as her, she would yell at you. So it came time for presentations and my friend had to present abortion on the pro side. When my friend finished, my teacher harassed her with questions and told her that her opinion was completely wrong. She gave her an F for the presentation.
The next year, I was in my last high school English class and this teacher helped me with my writing. My writing is still not where I want it to be but it is an improvement from my high school years. I wrote two papers which were my college admission essay and my senior paper. The college admission essay was for UNCW and I wrote their prompt and sent it to my teacher before sending it in so she could edit it for me. My senior paper was 11 pages long and had topics such as my strengths, my weaknesses, and my view on God, love, and technology. Some weeks we would have in class writings with a wide range of topics.
Thinking about these two classes, I benefited from my junior year teacherís closed mind because I learned how to deal with people like that and how to move forward from it. Also, I benefited from my senior year teacher because she helped me improve my writing skills by editing my papers and giving tons of feedback. On the other hand, I least benefited from my English classes before them, specifically my English 1 class I took my freshman year. I donít remember this class or who taught me so it couldnít have benefited me.
This semester, I hope to improve my writing skills and actually enjoy going to my English class. By writing every week, I can see that improvement is a realistic goal.
