TC Boyle is a very creative writer. It was not until recently in class that I learned how he names his characters. The way he does it, is naming them based on how they are as a person in story and how they act. Although in some stories, he does not even give some of the characters a name. Reason being is because he believes a name puts people in a category all by themselves. He does not name some because he wants you to create your own thought on the character. My favorite story in his book so far has to be The Human Fly. I like this story because it was able to keep me on my toes. It reminded me of the famous dare devil from way back when who was name Evel Knievel. The character in The Human fly wanted nothing in the world but to be famous. He did not want any money or women he just wanted to be remembered in history even after he has left the earth. Him wanting that so bad was admirable and spoke to me because no one today is really into anything for the passion. All they want is money and riches and to have a huge house. I liked that about the Human Fly.
I am not the biggest fan of the stories involving the love stories that are all sad and mopey. There needs to be at least some action or maybe even some comedy. However this sad love story in the TC Boyle book was not that bad. I found it comical a little. This poor guy just wanted to get into this beautiful younger girls pants but she was pyscho. She made him put on a full body condom for when they were having sex which technically does not count in my book. And after all that she put him through, he just so happened to fail a little test which was athletes foot and she dumped him. That is truly a sad story.
The closest thing I can relate these stories to are The Canterbury tales because of the Frame Story device.
