I am not a fan of reading, so I don’t have a reaction to any of the stories in the TC Boyles book. I don’t enjoy or dislike I just read them because they were assigned. If I had to choose one that I actually enjoyed, it would be Modern Love. This story made me laugh. The full body condom part made me laugh a little. Also, I felt sorry for the man because he was so desperate to have sex with her that he actually went through with her craziness. Then he told her he loved her and she was basically like I never cared anything about you except for you might have an infection or disease. Another story I sort of liked is on for the long haul because the irony in it made me laugh because he ended up putting his family in full danger when they were safe in the first place. The whole story just made him look stupid because the agent he paid to get out of the town was having his business revamped. The business was being revamped because he was scamming customers. Once I finished the story I said to myself “how stupid can you be”. The story I liked the least was The Human Fly. It was boring to me because the man was just crazy and people were going along with it. He wanted to kill himself and everyone realized it but said nothing. The agent was stupid as well as his boss. No one in the story cared about one another. The Boyles stories do have a lot of literary devices in them that are very easy to spot. In previous English classes that is all we talked about. My old teachers used to stress that we needed to learn how to identify literary devices and tone, in every story we read. I was never good at doing this but i guess after it gets drilled in then you pick up something from it. In this English class I feel that we focus more on theme when we are going over stories in class. We describe characters and focus on the motives throughout the story.
