Boyle Stories Discussion

I have, for the most part, enjoyed reading the TC Boyle stories. I like the authors writing style and the fact that the stories all seem to have a deeper meaning than the surface story. Boyle’s stories tend to be short enough that the reader stays interested but descriptive enough that the point is made clearly. We have mostly read stories from the Death section and I enjoyed reading some of those but my favorite one so far was the story we read from the Love section. The two stories that I enjoyed most, so far, from the Boyle book were In for the Long Haul and Modern Love. I think the reason I enjoyed In for the Long Haul so much because of the irony in it. There is this man who convinces his family to give up all the conveniences of their own home and social lives, to move on to some bomb shelter plantation. He gives every bit of money he has to the man who put the idea in his head. The point was to protect his family, and then the ONE thing that ends up killing the man is his new neighbor. I enjoyed Modern Love mostly because TC Boyle incorporates SO many of the relationship/ dating stereotypes and situations that I have experienced into the story. Reading Modern Love brought back all the funny, and not so funny, situations I have been in since I started dating. I haven’t necessarily disliked any of the stories we have read, but I did find it a little harder to get through Big Game and The Human Fly. These stories were harder for me to connect to which caused me to show less interest in them. In previous English classes, we read novels, which I am not a huge fan of as an assignment. I am a very selective reader so reading the short stories allows me to gain knowledge without having to FORCE myself through an entire novel that I may or may not be interested in at all. So far, this is my favorite English class that I have taken.
